Sunny.
Went to the Broadway show “Sweeney Todd(スウィーニー・トッド)”. This is a revival of the musical that won Tony Awards in 1979, and now it is nominated for some Tony Awards includes The Best Revival Musical. It is gonna be out in the theatre in Japan next year, stared by Ichimura Masachika(市村正親), Ohtake Shinobu(大竹しのぶ), directed by Miyamoto Amon(宮本亜門).
It was the most difficult musical to understand, because the songs were sung too fast to listen and there was only little movement in this revival version. In addition, for I decided to watch this show right before the show started, I had no time to do the research. As a result, I had no idea in Act 1, so I asked about the story to the girl next to me in the intermission.
She told me about the story in brief. Sweeney Todd is a barber and a serial killer(殺人鬼) in England urban legend(都市伝説), who kills his customers in his store and made them into meat pies and sold them. There are so many stories about him in English literature, and each work has different character of him. In this musical, for example, he has some tragic tastes. Anyway, with her little help, I could enjoy much more in Act 2. She was cute, by the way.
Although it was difficult to understand, the direction was terrific. In this musical, there is no orchestra pit, and the actors play the instruments instead. Almost all the time, all the actors were on stage, playing the music, when someone else is acting. It is actually surprising, they sing and act very well as the other Broadway Actors, and at the same time they can play such the special instruments like oboe or cello. Broadway,,, what a ridiculously high-level place to get!!
I went to the musical with my classmate Gen, but we watched separately. Before we bought the ticket, a very kind guy gave us the $111 ticket for free!! I appreciate him so much, but I bet he wouldn’t have given us the ticket if we hadn’t been with another girl classmate, Yoko. We were all together in front of the theatre, but the guy straightly went to Yoko and gave her the ticket!
Because Yoko had another thing to do, Gen and I got only one more cheap ticket and get inside. In act 1, he took the better seat, which is in the right side of the fourth line, and I took the cheap seat, which is the left side of the 15th line. And in the intermission, we switched, and it was so great idea. Each seat had good points. To feel the actors’ emotions, the former is great, and to enjoy the direction that gave really nice visions, the latter was perfect.
Considering the money we paid, that was not bad!!
