Sunny.
Lincoln Center. Watched the video of the play “Broken Glass(壊れたガラス)” by Arthur Miller(アーサー・ミラー), which moved me a lot. It became my favorite straight play that I saw in NY. The story is about a couple living in NY, in 193-, both are Jewish. Starts from the scene where Sylvia, the wife, get unable to stand up. The doctor speculates that the cause of her disability of her legs is her relationship with the husband. They actually don’t get along.
As the historical backdrop, the story is happening when the Holocausts are going on in Germany. Silvia has a strong identity as a Jewish, and she cannot stand the persecution to Jewish. Phillip, the husband, on the other hand, is opposite kind of Jewish. He doesn’t like being Jewish, at least from his behavior, he seems. As every single human does, however, Phillip has an extremely complicated and winded mind. That’s why we cannot hate him, even though he is a kind of creep.
Phillip was trying to escape from being himself, which is an impossible thing to do. His contradiction might have caused her legs’ problem.
The actor who was playing Phillip was good, showing his loneliness well. The actress of Silvia, too. I don know much about the Holocausts, but her sobbing with the compassion for the Jewish and the fury to the rest of the world’s ignoring.
That’s humanbeing, but I don’t wanna be Phillip.
